“Perry Winkles Kids is the joint effort of a Canadian mother-daughter design team. They make a wide variety of dresses to suit any occasion. Their new spring and summer line includes this great Smocked SOL Dress. I love the simple elegance of this look. It would be perfect for Easter, or any other big day. It is fancy enough for dressy occasions, but I can also see it being dressed down for a stroll through the park or a romp on the beach.

It is made from soft white cotton and the hand embroidery is in pink. Best of all, it is machine washable. You can purchase one for $80 at perrywinkleskids.com. While you are there, check out the rest of this up-and-coming line. It is available in sizes from 2T to 6.”

I feel very fortunate that my two young daughters were not born with any life-threatening allergies. A very good friend of our family – Elise, a little girl of 5 – has multiple life-threatening allergies (to peanuts, tree-nuts and eggs) and I see first-hand on a regular basis how challenging living with these allergies can be. Her parents are still learning how to provide Elise as normal a life as possible, given that she could be in contact with potentially dangerous foods every single day. Our friends face this challenge every day. A routine boat ride for example this past weekend to go get ice cream with the kids, to them turns into a complicated task – they had to buy plastic spoons that have for sure not touched any other food, boxed ice cream cones and a tub of Chapman’s ice cream that they trust has been manufactured in a nut-free facility. They (and us in sympathy) did not even look at what the ice cream parlour had to offer.

Elise’s mom has done extensive research as to what foods her daughter can eat. One of her favourite finds is Cherrybrook Kitchen. This company, based in Burlington, MA, provides nut-free egg-free dairy-free baked goods mixes. They have baking mixes for every baked good you would want and need (while keeping your family and friends safe) – brownies, cakes, frostings, pancakes. They also have some gluten-free goods. Cherrybrook provides you with the mixes for all these fabulous baked goods; you just have to mix the ingredients in the box with a few extra items and bake. I have tasted a few of their goodies and I must say that they are delicious! They sell in stores all over the U.S. and deliver to most of Canada and Europe.

Up to now, 9 months after lugging my diaper bag everywhere I go, I have been pretty happy with my Skip Hop diaper bag, a gift from a friend at my baby shower. It’s handy and fashionable, durable and spacious enough to hold everything I need for the day. I was very disappointed last week when one of the strap clips cracked. As you know, a diaper bag that you can’t carry over your shoulder or snap onto your stroller is, simply, useless!

To my great relief Skip Hop customer support was immediately responsive to my issue; I was told that the store where the bag was purchased would replace it. Sure enough, the store asked no questions nor needed to see a receipt to replace the damaged bag with a new one. Even better – I lucked out with the new model that now has me raving about Skip Hop’s product development. Basically, they have addressed all the little annoyances that the old model had.

The new model of the Duo Deluxe has magnetic closures, which means no sweaters caught on the velcro; the lining is now a contrasting colour, which makes it easier to find things inside a black bag; the strap now has a shoulder pad; and, my favourite new feature, the new clips mean you don’t have to switch straps when you go from hanging it on your stroller to putting it on your shoulder. I love the new model! So, deep down, I’m glad I got a defective bag the first time!

I’m convinced that good customer support is what sets great companies apart. And I’m definitely checking in frequently with Skip Hop for new models, since they seem to be so in touch with their end users!
