I love anything smocked!!! I can truly say I am an addict for smocked dresses, bubbles and pant sets. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter I started buying them and buying them! Smocked dresses are so timeless and clothing work of art. My favorite is the bishop and angel sleeve styles. With these styles you can get 2-3 years of wear out of one dress. I like to buy mine long and then as my daughter grows I pair them with bloomers or pantaloons.

I was recently given the opportunity to review a smocked dress from Perry Winkles Kids. They make beautiful hand-smocked dresses. We received the Ursala smocked sundress. It is breathtaking. The quality is second to none! It is made of a gorgeous, super soft cotton in green with a fun plaid pattern and is completely lined. It has pearlized buttons in the back from the top to the bottom. We just love it!! The smocking detail is amazing!! I love the fact that I can dress this dress up or down. I can pair it with keds or sandals for a more casual look or with a pair of mary janes for a dressier look.

Here is a picture of Riley in her new dress. I took several pictures of Riley in her new dress but had my camera on the wrong setting. This is the only one I could salvage.

Perry Winkles Kids is a Canadian-based mother and daughter team. They are both moms that appreciate good quality and easy to care for clothing. They only work with natural fibres (like 100% pima cotton) and they place a huge importance in bringing you a high-quality and unique product.

They offer sizes ranging from 3 months to 6T.

As featured on ‘My Organized Chaos’ (www.myorganizedchaos.net, June 22, 2009):

My daughter is such a girly-girl. No matter the day, or the weather – she can always be found in a dress. And the fancier the better. So, when I came across PerryWinkles Kids – it seemed like a match made in heaven. The dresses found here are simply divine, and made in a very special way…

Started by a Canadian Mother and daughter team, PerryWinkles Kids features elegant smocked dresses. What’s smocked? It’s a decorative feature that is made by sewing fine pleats. The result is very stunning, and very feminine. This company is unique in that their items are hand smocked and hand embroidered, using pima cotton in Peru. This cotton material is a very soft and luxurious cotton, it has a subtle sheen to it. Yet, is perfect for kids’ clothes because it can be easily machine or hand washed (depending on the item).

Isabelle received the Marian Sundress, a light blue dress which falls below the knees.
The beautiful dress is something that when taken out of the gift box, we both were speechless. Isabelle let out one big , “Wow” and hugged it tightly. (Yep, loves her dresses) I am most impressed that the entire dress is lined on the inside. She has had a couple of dresses in the past (with smocking detail) and they all itched so bad she never wore them. The inside lining makes it both comfortable and gives it some extra ‘poof’ and shape. The hand embroidery on the bodice is gorgeous, white rosebuds amongst the blue makes for a nice design. I have inspected this dress before and after washing and I must say, the stitching is superb. It is both a light dress to wear on a summer day, and exquisite enough for a special occasion. (or to the city market, as my daughter insisted) I can tell that it was made with much care and attention, I can see this being passed down for many to wear and love.

PerryWinkles Princess
You know, I never ever have considered myself a “girly girl”. Nope, I hated dresses and skirts, bows & frills were not my thing, and even doing my hair up nice or wearing jewelry rarely happened. I didn’t even like the color pink. But then I had my own baby girl and EVERYTHING changed! haha. All of a sudden I see how adorable and gorgeous dresses can be. And not only is my baby girl wearing pink…but so am I!! Even an abundance of hair clips, bows, and little necklaces have made their way into my home. And I must admit…I love it. PerryWinkles Kids sent Emily the most gorgeous dress ever. It’s the real deal. PerryWinkles Kids has the most adorable hand-smocked dresses for little girls – perfect for special occasions or even for just wearing around the house or to the shopping mall. Besides the fact that these dresses are absolutely precious, they’re also made from natural fibres (such as incredibly soft pima cotton) and are 100% machine washable!! If you have a little girl, I’m sure you know how hard it is to find a beautiful dress for her that is cute, comfy AND easy to clean!

The dress that our little princess is wearing is the Sol Sleeveless Smocked dress. It is made of a soft and VERY comfy cotton. Nothing itchy, nothing scratchy, nothing too heavy or too hot. This sweet dress is perfect a special occasion or for running, playing and wearing all summer long if you wish!

We are a mother-daughter team, with myself and my mother the co-owners of this business. I am the mom of two beautiful girls who are the inspiration for many of our designs. We created PerryWinkles when we found a need in today’s market for dressier, yet practical, little girls’ clothes. As moms ourselves, with busy schedules, we value practicality and so our dresses are all machine-washable and comfortable enough for every-day use. Also, we use only natural fabrics like 100% pima cotton. We aim to dress little girls in upstanding quality dresses that they can run around in bare feet in as well as dress up for special occasions.

This year’s spring and summer lines feature delicate touches in the Babies line and playful elegance in the Little Girls line. The Babies line features a romper decorated with a dainty and feminine floral design for a baby’s first few months of life, and a delicate bishop-style dress in a thin 100% cotton fabric, also hand-smocked in a floral design. The Little Girls line includes Daniela, a sleeveless, hand-smocked dress in a feminine floral printed fabric; Evelyn, a classic, short-sleeve pique cotton dress with hand-smocked bodice and smart ribbon detail on the skirt; and Katherine, a fun, apple-green and pink dress in a soft Oxford cotton fabric.

One of our favourite fabrics to work with for our Fall and Winter collections of little girls’ hand-smocked dresses is viyella (vī yel′ə, vi-). This gorgeous fabric is made of natural fibres and is soft and cozy, making it perfect for dresses for every little girl during the colder months. For the 2008 Fall and 2009 Winter we used viyella in our stunning and unique new Jane hand-smocked dress.

What is viyella? This soft, light, flannel-like fabric is made of a blend of lamb’s wool (merino wool) and fine cotton. It was first woven in 1893 in England and originally made made of 55 per cent merino wool and 45 per cent cotton in a twill weave. The name Viyella is based on the unusually-named valley road, Via Gellia, near Matlock in England, where in 1890 Hollins & Co., the first makers of viyella, acquired a mill used for the early production of viyella. Viyella was a soft dress-weight fabric which was more resistant to shrinkage than any comparable pure wool alternative. It rapidly became the most famous and coveted cloth in the world, renowned for its durability and softness. Viyella was the first fabric to be branded.

The viyella we use at PerryWinkles Kids is made in Peru, with local merino wool and 100% pima cotton – absolutely gorgeous, soft, elegant and cozy.

After today’s gorgeous and warm day in the East coast, it’s hard to imagine our little princesses will be needing warmer outfits.

If you are a start-up company in the apparel industry, I highly recommend a site called Fashion Incubator. Fashion Incubator offers great advice for apparel manufacturing and the fashion business in general, particularly for small businesses. It has been an invaluable source of information for my business of girls’ stylish smocked dresses. I have found very useful resources on how to build a line sheet for my Spring/Summer line of little girl dresses, advice on the role of sales reps in the clothing industry, and comments on the pros and cons of having a website when you are also trying to sell to retailers. Kathleen Fasanella, who has nearly 27 years of experience in the apparel industry, writes nearly all the material on the site. Subscribing to receive their emails is free. Along the same line, I recommend Toronto Fashion Incubator. This site, with a focus on Toronto, ‘nurtures and supports fashion entrepreneurs’. The content is nevertheless not free; you can become a member for $130…..which I still haven’t done. I’m tempted to join to gain access to interesting seminars and information, such as a list of retailers in Canada and the U.S. and Sales Reps. As a small business in the children’s clothing business, with limited funds for professional advice, these sites have become extremely useful as a source of information to guide me through the intricacies of having a small business designing and manufacturing little girls’ dresses.
